James Lawton's first major cricket assignment as a young sportswriter for the Daily Express was to interview Sir Garfield Sobers. A somewhat more tumultuous meeting followed some years later with Viv Richards in Antigua, when the great batsman chose to berate him in the press box rather than lead his West Indian team out against England. In a career which has included coverage of Test cricket at home and abroad he has had the opportunity to observe and know such legends as Botham, Lara, Warne, McGrath, Tendulkar, and Ponting. Some of Lawton's trenchant opinions on cricket – and life – have been shaped by his early coverage of the Yorkshire championship-winning team, in which players such as Ray Illingworth and Fred Trueman were always ready to bestow some hard-bitten wisdom – on both him and others.
In 2000 James Lawton became Chief Sports Writer of The Independent and his column is among the most admired and celebrated of the last decade. He has won multiple awards, including Sports Journalist of the Year, Sports Columnist of the Year, Sports Feature Writer of the Year and Sports Writer of the Year, a title he holds currently.
Michael Atherton, former England cricket captain, introduces the collection. Atherton began his first-class cricket career in 1987 and was called up for the first of his 115 Test matches in 1989 taking over the captaincy as a 25-year-old in 1993. He is currently cricket correspondent for The Times. He is also a successful TV and radio commentator.
On Cricket is edited by Ivan Ponting, an experienced journalist and author with more than 30 books to his credit, including Sixty Summers – Somerset Cricket Since The War, which he co-authored with David Foot and which won the National Sporting Club’s Cricket Book of the Year award in 2007.
