Luiz Felipe SCOLARI
The Man, The Manager
by José Carlos Freitas

Luiz Felipe ‘Big Phil’ Scolari is one of the most successful of football managers. A former player, Scolari was known as an uncompromising defender but one who could engender great loyalty. When he took up management he soon gained a reputation for a quick temper and for his histrionic performances pitch-side. In 2007, he was subject to a disciplinary procedure after having apparently thrown a punch at a Serbian player at the end of a qualifier for Euro 2008.

He has worked for 16 clubs in 4 different continents but it was his triumph in taking on a failing Brazilian team in 2001 and leading them to success in the 2002 World Cup that established his reputation. He achieved similar results in Portugal leading them to the Euro 2004 finals.

It was no surprise that when England were looking for a new manager they turned to Scolari, though when he realised the level of intrusion he could expect from the British media he swiftly turned down the offer. The book contains revealing insights into this period. It also follows his career through to Summer 2008 and his appointment as Chelsea manager.

A strong motivator, Scolari’s methods are sometimes unconventional. He has been known to use Sun Tzu’s The Art Of War – a 6th century Chinese military treatise, as well as dance music and videos to build team spirit and national pride. Ultimately it is his ability to work with the players which has led to such success – by them, he is seen as both a ‘father’ and a friend.

José Carlos Freitas is a respected Portuguese journalist. He knows Scolari well and has met and interviewed him on countless occasions.
